The Value of Life Story Writing
“There is so much power in someone telling their story, and there is an abundance of science supporting this”, according to Dr. Gerben J. Westerhof, Professor and Department Chair of Psychology, Health and Technology at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.
We had the honor of learning from Dr. Westerhof earlier this month when we participated in a meeting of the International Center for Life Story Innovations and Practice (ICLIP): Life Story Research and Practice Collaborative.
Dr. Westerhof’s research focuses on how technology supports the sharing and promotion of personal stories in the service of developing identity, mental health, and well-being across the lifespan.
He explained that life review involves a process of recollecting, evaluating, and attributing meaning to positive and negative memories. Although life review is about memories from the past, it serves to guide people through their present and their future. Life review takes place across the entire adult lifespan, in particular during times of change.
Research from cognitive, personality and gerontological psychology has shown that life review is related to mental health and well-being. Dr. Westerhof explained that there is increasing evidence that life-story work is effective for reducing depressive symptoms and promoting well-being.
I shared with Dr. Westerhof and ICLIP attendees the amazing and positive impact I have personally witnessed in my many years as a career and leadership coach as I led individuals to explore, write, and talk about their personal and career accomplishments. These stories build the confidence individuals need to build their leadership styles and move forward in their careers and leadership journeys.
