Memories We Don’t Want Lost
Our stories, our parents' stories, our grandparents’ stories, and others’ stories are so important to us, but too often we realize that importance when it’s too late to capture and document those stories.
I remember when my mother was living, my daughter and I gifted her with a pretty pink book entitled, My Memories, that we bought at the corner stationery store. The book asked questions of the readers about their past memories and provided blanks for readers to fill in their answers. My daughter and I imagined that Mom would take her time, read the questions, fill in the blanks with her answers, add her pictures, and we would have this wonderful remembrance later when she was gone.
Imagine our disappointment when we went through my late mother's things and found that, aside from basic facts and dates, she hadn't written anything meaningful in that book at all.
Now I understand that just handing her that book was not enough. My mother needed the support of a nurturing, interactive process where she could share her stories, and her feelings about those events….her memories. There are so many questions now I wish I could ask her about being a little girl growing up in a rural coal mining town in Pennsylvania, and what it felt like stepping in and filling the void in the munitions factory to support the war effort while my dad was overseas serving his country. I’d love to know more about these and so many other things that we never had time to deeply explore in the ‘busyness’ of our lives.
